As a parent, it is up to you to ensure that your child has a safe browsing experience. There are plenty of sites out there that are inappropriate for young computer users, so you will need an application that can block these sites. Such an application is the SoftForYou-developed and appropriately named CyberSieve. This application will filter out the sites that are unsuitable for a young viewer.

Downloading the 6.5MB application off the web and installing it onto your Windows-powered computer will not take long. During the installation, you will be asked to temporarily disable your firewall, antivirus, and/or antispyware program, you will be informed that you must restart all open internet browsers for CyberSieve to take effect, and you will have to choose between the Single PC version (install the PC version when you have one or more computers that need protection and there is no need to administer CyberSieve remotely from another computer) and Network version (allows you to manage all installed copies of CyberSieve remotely from an administrator’s computer).

While CyberSieve is up and running, you will see a blue icon in the system tray. From this icon you can enable or disable CyberSieve’s filtering capabilities, its control panel and you can change the password that protects against unauthorized use of CyberSieve.

Putting the spotlight on CyberSieve’s filtering capabilities, the application comes with a built-in database of websites that are unsuited for children. This includes gambling, drugs, adult sites and more. On top of that you can block websites based on keywords, you can block any site you want by adding it to the blocked websites list and you can set up time limits for special websites.

CyberSieve can block access to applications as well. If there are applications installed on your computer that you don’t want your child to access, you can add those applications to the blocked programs list. And if there are applications that you want your child to access, but you don’t want him to spend too much time using them, you can add those applications to the special programs list.

To bypass the limitations you set in place, your child might try to disable CyberSieve. As mentioned above, the application is password-protected. You can set a password that will block access to CyberSieve’s functionality. This way, your child will not be able to disable CyberSieve.

You have 14 days at your disposal to test CyberSieve and see if the functionality it has to offer suits your needs. Once that trial period is over, you will have to get a license to keep using the application.

CyberSieve is a handy tool and a must have for parents. It will block access to sites unsuitable for young children and it will prevent them from launching certain applications.

Pros

Choose between the single PC version and the Network version. A password prevents against unauthorized use of CyberSieve. You can play with various settings from the control panel. Comes with a built-in database of websites unsuitable for your children. Block access to certain applications. Set up time limits for internet and application usage.

Cons

Free to try for a 14-day evaluation period.
